일원상은 원불교에서 본 우주와 인생의 궁극적 진리의 상징이다.

이를 ‘일원상의 진리’ 또는 ‘법신불 일원상’이라 하여, 최고의 종지宗旨로 삼는다.

이는 교조 소태산 자신이 20여년간의 구도 끝에 도달한 대각 大覺이다.

“만유가 한 체성이며 만법이 한 근원이로다.

“Everything is one body, and everything is one source.

이 가운데 인과보응되는 이치가 서로 바탕하여

‘이 가운데 한一 두렷한圓 기틀相’이란 바로 일원상을 지칭한 것이다.

이때 일一 은 근원ㆍ전체ㆍ유일ㆍ절대를 뜻한다.

그리고 원圓은 완전ㆍ충만 등의 의미이다.

And circle is meaning of completeness, and fullness.

상相은 이러한 일원의 궁극처를 형상화한 것이다.

Sang is the image of the ultimate of one circle.

이러한 원 상징은 인류의 정신문화사에 있어 보편적으로 나타나는 현상이다.
