Korea’s national competitiveness surged to the world’s top 11th, up 12 notches from a year earlier, according to results of the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report 2007~2008 announced on October 29.
According to the 2006 WEF’s Global Competitiveness Report, the nation’s ranking had fallen from 19th to 24th place, mainly due to undiminished regulations and bureaucracy as well as opaque corporate governance.
The nation’s turbulent labor-management relationship is notorious worldwide.
It was no longer news that ineffective, meddlesome government and unstable labor-management relationships had pulled down Korea’s international competitiveness.
The WEF report, and a similar ranking made by the International Institution for Management Development, are two sources for gauging global competitiveness.
The problem, however, is the inconsistency of their response; officials blow their own trumpets whenever the rankings go up.
Instead of being gladdened and saddened by turns with the annual ranking change, We need simply be aware of its advantages and disadvantages. It is because the meaning of statistics or reports can vary depending on consumers’ interpretation.
한국 국가경쟁력 세계 11위로 상승
지난 10월 29일 세계경제포럼이 발표한 2007 국가경쟁력 보고서에 따르면 우리나라의 경쟁력은 지난해에 비해 무려 12위가 상승한 전체 11위로 평가됐다.
2006 WEF의 국제 경쟁력 보고서에 따르면, 우리나라의 순위는 주로 불투명한 기업 지배구조뿐만 아니라 줄어들지 않는 규제와 관료주의 때문에, 19위에서 24위로 떨어졌었다.
우리나라의 소란스러운 노사관계는 세계적으로 악명이 높다.
비효율적이고 간섭을 일삼는 정부와 불안정한 노사관계가 한국의 국제 경쟁력을 끌어내려 왔다는 사실은 더 이상 뉴스가 아니었다.
WEF의 보고서와 국제 경영 개발원의 비슷한 순위표는 국제 경쟁력을 측정하는 두개의 원천이다.
그러나 문제는 이들의 반응이 한결같지 않다는 점으로서 관리들은 순위가 올라가기만 하면 자화자찬에 바쁘기 때문이다.
매년 바뀌는 경쟁력 순위에 일희일비 할 것이 아니라 우리는 단지 장단점을 잘 인식하고 있기만 하면 된다. 통계나 보고서의 의미는 이를 소비하는 사람들의 해석에 따라 달라질 수 있기 때문이다. |
